Recognizing the Warning Signs of Excessive Stress at Work

The Chinese philosopher Confucius once said: “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Of course, even those who love their jobs commonly experience stress at the worksite. Stress is a normal part of the workday, but excessive stress should be monitored. Employees who are stressed out may become less productive. What’s worse, it could affect your physical and mental health.

There are many reasons why you may feel stressed at work. For many, the fear of being laid off is enough to cause great anxiety. Others may feel stressed because they are being forced to work overtime because their coworkers have been let go. Many workers in Los Angeles simply feel too much pressure to meet unfair and unreasonable expectations.

These types of stress can manifest in real physical and emotional issues. Here are a few early warning signs of excessive stress at work:

  • Anxiety, irritability, and depression
  • A loss of interest in work you once enjoyed
  • Difficulties concentrating on the task at hand
  • Stomach issues
  • Muscle tension
  • Headaches that are not easily lessened by pain killers or caffeine
  • Social withdrawal
  • Loss of sex drive
  • Use of alcohol or drugs to cope

If you are worried about losing your job, you are probably not interested in telling your boss that you are stressed. Therefore, you may need to take action on your own. Try to pay attention to your health and recognize when your symptoms begin and when you start to feel stressed. Take a deep breath and step away from the negative situation that is causing you anxiety. You may be able to find a way to alter what’s bothering you without making a major change.

Some workers find that exercising in the morning is enough to increase their energy and positivity. Others find that changing their diet is enough to keep them focused and happy. Try to get sleep, take a real, honest look at your situation, and reach out to trusted friends to discuss your options. There is help available and you can overcome anything before your stress begins to control your life.
