The most common worker injuries are sprains and strains, and worker injury is most often the result of materials handling incidents.
These are the findings of The Travelers Companies in its Injury Impact Report. This report, issued by the largest workers’ compensation carrier in the U.S., assessed data on 1.5 million worker’s compensation claims filed between 2010 and 2014 from all types and sizes of businesses and industries.

- Sprains and strains – 30%

Most Frequent Causes of Workplace Injuries
Materials handling is the most frequent cause of injuries in the workplace, with slips, trips and falls coming in next. After that, being struck by or colliding with an object and accidents involving tools are the most frequent injury causes.
On average, inflammation and fractures cause the most lost work time – 91 and 78 workdays, respectively. Sprains and strains result in 57 missed workdays with cuts and puncture injuries causing an average of 24 missed workdays.
Some key findings that may assist industries in instituting injury-reduction measures include:
- Material handling accidents were especially common in the retail and manufacturing industries.
- Falling from height was one of the top causes of construction and retail injuries.
- Motor vehicle accidents were one of the most frequent causes of injury only in the oil and gas industry.
- Eye injuries were one of the most frequent types in manufacturing and construction.
This and other similar data analyses can help businesses and industries develop processes and training programs to prevent injuries and keep employees safer.
