Beware of Phone Scam Targeting Social Security Disability Recipients

Watch out for a telephone scam aimed at individuals receiving Social Security Disability (SSD)benefits.

The calls targeting SSD recipients claim that their accounts have been hacked and that their Social Security assets are frozen. The callers identified themselves as from the Social Security Administration and stated that there had been illegal or suspicious activity with the individual’s Social Security number.

The phishing calls direct the SSDbeneficiaries to call a “paralegal officer” immediately. These victims have been lured to call and potentially divulge personal information that can lead to identity theft.

Identity theft isn’t just about losing money, although the financial loss can be devastating. Your credit record may be ruined and fraudulent debt can be attributed to you. Other false records, such as arrest, imprisonment, and medical records, can be tied to you.

Be Cautious When Providing Bank Account or Social Security Numbers Over the Phone

These SSD scam calls are another attempt to steal an individual’s Social Security number or identity. Here are our tips on dealing with any phishing calls:

  • Never give out or even confirm private information unless you are sure of your caller. Sensitive data includes your Social Security number, credit card, and bank account information. You can never be sure of who is calling you.
  • Don’t trust a caller ID name or telephone number. Scammers use sophisticated technology to “spoof” the telephone display. The call may appear to be from Washington, D.C., but the call can come from anywhere and anyone.
  • Contact the Social Security Administration directly. You are welcome to call this agency with any questions or concerns at 1-800-772-1213, available Monday through Friday from 7am to 7pm. They will help you verify the caller’s identification and the reason for the call before you give out any information.
