Expedited Disability Process for Veterans Announced

The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced that it will be working more closely with the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) in order to expedite SSDI claims for veterans. The new process will treat certain veteran’s claims as a high priority and will handle those claims much as they handle disability claims from Wounded Warriors.

The new process, as explained by Carolyn Colvin, the Acting Commissioner of the SSA, green lights a closer collaboration between the SSA and the VA to identify veterans with disabilities who have a high probability of meeting SSA standards for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits.

To be considered for expedited status a veteran must have a VA disability compensation rating of 100 Permanent & Total (P&T) and must show the proof of their disability rating with a VA Notification Letter.

While the process for consideration to receive SSDI may be expedited in these cases, it does not guarantee that a veteran who meets this criterion will automatically be approved to receive SSDI benefits. He or she will still be required to meet other strict eligibility requirements to receive those benefits. In other words, if you are a veteran seeking benefits, you will still have to go through the application process.

“Our veterans have sacrificed much for our country, and it is only right that we ensure they have timely access to disability benefits they may be eligible for and deserve. I am proud of our collaboration and happy to announce this new service for America’s vets,” said Colvin.

If you are a veteran, you may be eligible for the expedited SSDI application process.
