What Is the SSA’s Listing of Impairments?

The SSA’s Listing of Impairments, also known as the Blue Book, is a guidebook published by the Social Security Administration (SSA). It lists medical conditions and impairments that could qualify you for disability benefits.

The SSA’s Blue Book is divided into two parts, A&B:

  • Part A: Covers adult disabilities
  • Part B: Covers children’s disabilities

Categorization

Each part is categorized into body systems and medical conditions. Some examples:
  • Musculoskeletal disorders.
  • Respiratory impairments.
  • Mental disorders.
  • Cardiovascular conditions and more.

For each medical condition or impairment, specific criteria are provided in the listing for disability consideration under Social Security law. The requirements usually include condition severity, duration, and associated functional limitations. If the criteria are met, the individual may be disabled without further evaluation. However, meeting the Listing of Impairments is not the only way to qualify for disability benefits.

The SSA considers Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) and evaluates Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) to determine if a person is able to work. If the condition doesn’t meet the criteria, SSA considers the individual’s limitations, work history, age, education, etc., to determine if they can work. This is done through assessing medical records, documentation, and sometimes through exams.

Disability Attorney

While the SSA Listing of Impairments provides guidance, consult with a qualified attorney to understand how your condition may impact eligibility for disability benefits. They can help with the application process and present a strong case for disability benefits based on specific circumstances and medical evidence. If your medical condition is not listed in the SSA Listing of Impairments, it does not automatically disqualify you from Social Security Disability benefits. The Listing of Impairments is helpful but not exhaustive in listing every potential medical condition or impairment leading to disability.

When a condition is not listed, the SSA will use a different approach to evaluate your case. They will determine the severity and impact of your condition on work and functional limitations. This is the RFC assessment. The RFC assessment evaluates your ability to perform work activities, including sitting, standing, lifting, carrying, and other tasks. The SSA will assess how your condition impacts daily activities, work function, and job availability.

If not listed in the Blue Book, it’s vital to present a strong case and provide evidence demonstrating the severity of your condition and its impact on work. Consulting with a qualified disability attorney well-versed in Social Security Law and the system can help you obtain the best possible result for your disability claim or an appeals process.
